Synopsis

Die Insel der Freundschaft, published in German translation by DuMont in 2017, is a reflective literary novel by Japanese author Durian Sukegawa, best known internationally for Sweet Bean Paste. Like that earlier novel, this book is quiet and character-driven, following a protagonist who withdraws from conventional society to build a simpler, more self-sufficient life centered on the natural world and the animals — in this case goats — that share it with him.

Sukegawa's writing is marked by gentle pacing, close attention to nature, and an undercurrent of melancholy beneath its outwardly peaceful subject matter, using the protagonist's rural retreat as a lens on isolation, purpose, and what it means to build a meaningful life outside society's usual expectations.
