Synopsis

In a provincial Russian town, a group of would-be revolutionaries gathers around the charismatic and coldly manipulative Pyotr Verkhovensky, who dreams of tearing down the old order through chaos, terror, and murder. At the center of their orbit stands the enigmatic Nikolai Stavrogin, a magnetic and morally hollow young aristocrat whose influence corrupts everyone who falls under his spell.

As the conspirators scheme, philosophize, and turn on one another, their radical idealism curdles into nihilism and violence, culminating in a real crime modeled on a notorious political murder that shocked Russia in 1869.

Inspired by that true event, Dostoevsky conceived Demons as a savage indictment of the revolutionary and materialist ideologies he believed were poisoning his country. By turns satirical, tragic, and prophetic, it is one of his darkest and most politically charged novels, a chilling study of how abstract ideas can license the destruction of human lives.
