Synopsis

A protective stasis has swallowed Poppy, her body broken and her power drained, pulling her past the edge of the living world. Casteel is left to run a kingdom coming apart around him, changed by an anger he does not yet understand. Kieran, the wolven bound to them both, holds the crown together while carrying a grief neither of them will say aloud.

This novella sits inside Jennifer L. Armentrout's Blood and Ash series, set after The Primal of Blood and Bone and before The Throne of Bone and Ash. Rather than follow Poppy, it moves between Casteel and Kieran, and its scope is smaller and more inward than the full novels around it.

The chapters dwell on waiting instead of combat. Casteel and Kieran weigh what they owe each other and what they still owe Poppy, even as old loyalties between the realm's gods and its mortals keep fraying. It reads as a quieter interlude for readers who already know the series.

It is a special-edition addition to Blood and Ash, positioned between the series' seventh and eighth full novels.
