Synopsis

Burning for Revenge is the fifth book in John Marsden's Tomorrow series, following a group of Australian teenagers who become guerrilla fighters after returning from a camping trip to find their country invaded. Separated from the New Zealand soldiers they had been guiding, Ellie and the rest of her small group must survive and keep resisting on their own, deep in enemy-held territory.

The novel continues the series' close, first-person account -- narrated by Ellie -- of ordinary teenagers forced into sabotage, combat, and constant fear, as they grapple with what the war has already cost them and what they are willing to do to keep fighting it. It sits in the middle of the seven-book series that began with Tomorrow, When the War Began.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I read this book without reading the earlier ones in the series?

This novel is the fifth installment in a tightly structured, linear saga where character relationships and survival stakes evolve significantly over time. Reading out of order is strongly discouraged because the narrative relies heavily on the consequences of events and personal developments from the preceding four books.

  • Is there a specific order I should follow for the entire series?

The recommended path is to read the seven books of the original series in their publication order, starting with Tomorrow, When the War Began, before moving on to the three-book follow-up series titled The Ellie Chronicles.
