Between Your Memories

Droemer Knaur

Synopsis

Between Your Memories concludes Basma Hallak's Kalima und Nói duology. Kalima is back in Berlin, trying to put Iceland behind her -- the town of Vallarheiði that slowly became home, the photo lab where she found new creative inspiration, and Nói, the man she was building a life with. Most of all, she is trying to outrun what happened at the shopping center, a trauma that follows her across thousands of kilometers and turns her from the sunshine she used to be into someone fighting anxiety attack by anxiety attack.

When Nói unexpectedly appears on her doorstep and asks to stay, Kalima has to decide whether she can let herself be loved again while she is still fighting to feel like herself. The novel moves the story from Iceland's landscapes to Berlin, and continues to explore racism and the way Kalima's Muslim identity is viewed by people around her, alongside the harder work of healing and trusting another person again.
