Synopsis

In Animal Rights, Gary L. Francione argues that animal welfare legislation is insufficient because it treats animals as objects to be managed rather than beings with inherent rights. By drawing on the argument from marginal cases — comparing the moral status of nonhuman animals to humans with limited cognitive or physical abilities — he builds a case for dismantling the legal and cultural systems that treat sentient creatures as property, food, or entertainment.
