Synopsis

Ajaya: Roll of the Dice is a 2013 Indian novel of mythology and epic fiction by Anand Neelakantan. The first installment of the Ajaya series, it retells the Mahabharata from the perspective of the Kaurava prince Duryodhana rather than the traditional victors' narrative.

Told in a gritty, first-person voice, the novel follows Duryodhana and his brother Karna as they navigate rivalry, ambition, and the escalating conflict with their Pandava cousins. The story culminates in the fateful dice game that sets the epic war in motion, reframed through the eyes of a man the tradition has always cast as the villain.

Richly atmospheric and grounded in the Sanskrit epic tradition, this retelling gives voice to a complex, morally ambiguous protagonist caught between loyalty, destiny, and a fate he cannot outrun.
