Acceptance
The Southern Reach is finished as an agency, its director gone into Area X and not come back, and the border is moving. What is left of the staff has one last crossing in them.
Acceptance braids three times at once. Saul Evans keeps the lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast in the years before any of this, tending a beam and a friendship with a local child. That child grows up to be Gloria, director of the Southern Reach, and her account runs alongside him. And in the present, Ghost Bird — the thing that came back wearing the biologist's face — goes across the border with Control, heading for the island the expeditions were never told about.
The third volume closes Jeff VanderMeer's trilogy by going backwards as much as forwards, answering how the border first came down without ever quite explaining what stands behind it.
Known throughout as Control. Carries one of the three braided storylines through the final volume of the trilogy.
A former preacher keeping the lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast in the years before the border came down.
Director of the Southern Reach, followed here from her childhood on the Forgotten Coast before the border existed.
The returned double of the biologist, who goes back across the border in the final volume.
