Absolution
Ten years before the first expedition crossed into Area X, a team of biologists was sent to the same stretch of Forgotten Coast to count alligators. Something came for them there, and Central buried what was left of the record.
Absolution works that buried ground in three parts. A reconstruction of the biologists' last days assembled from fragments; Old Jim, a Central man running a bar in the nearby town, pulled into an investigation of a lighthouse and the people conducting experiments inside it; and the first expedition sent across the border once Area X had woken, told by a young agent named Lowry, who would spend the rest of his career at the Southern Reach shaping every expedition that followed.
The fourth Southern Reach novel arrived a decade after Acceptance and reads as both prequel and answer, filling in how the border came down and how thoroughly the agency was compromised before it ever sent anyone in.
A Central operative running a bar on the Forgotten Coast, assigned to investigate the lighthouse and the experiments being conducted there.
The young agent on Central's first expedition across the border, who goes on to shape every Southern Reach expedition that follows.
