Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (Shams al-Din Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr) was a Hanbali jurist, theologian and scholar born in Damascus in 691 AH (1292 CE). In 712 AH (1312 CE), at age 21, he joined the study circle of Ibn Taymiyyah and remained his closest student for roughly sixteen years, including a period of imprisonment together in Damascus for their shared positions on grave visitation and divorce jurisprudence.
