Synopsis

In the small town of Clanton, Mississippi, two white men brutally rape a ten-year-old Black girl. When the law seems likely to let them off lightly, her father, Carl Lee Hailey, takes justice into his own hands and shoots them dead in the courthouse. Charged with murder, Carl Lee turns to Jake Brigance, a young, idealistic white lawyer, to defend him in a trial that will put the whole town — and the racial fault lines of the Deep South — on trial with him.

As Jake mounts an all-but-impossible insanity defense, the case draws national attention, and with it the Ku Klux Klan, riots, threats against Jake's family, and a community pushed to the brink. Jake risks everything he has to save a man he believes was right to do a terrible thing.

John Grisham's debut novel, A Time to Kill, is a searing legal thriller about vengeance, prejudice, and justice — and the first book to feature his enduring hero, attorney Jake Brigance.
