Synopsis

Five years after the Carl Lee Hailey trial, Jake Brigance is reluctantly appointed by Judge Omar Noose to defend Drew Gamble, a sixteen-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing Stuart Kofer, a sheriff's deputy who had been abusing Drew's mother.

With the town of Clanton, Mississippi demanding a swift conviction and the death penalty, Jake digs into the circumstances behind the killing and uncovers a pattern of abuse in the Gamble household. Defending Drew puts Jake's finances, his standing in town, and his family's safety at risk.

The third novel to feature attorney Jake Brigance, set in the same fictional Ford County as A Time to Kill and Sycamore Row.
