A Modern Witch
Lauren closes high-end deals for Chicago's toughest real estate clients and is certain magic is not real. That certainty ends when an online chat room built for witches somehow includes her. The group sends a witch named Jamie to find out why.
What Jamie finds is a woman with mind-witch abilities stronger than anyone expected, and no idea what to do with them. Lauren is pulled into a community of witches scattered across several states. It runs less like a coven and more like an extended, oversharing family, complete with training sessions, group chats, and firm opinions about her love life.
The book leans on warmth and humor rather than danger. Nat, Lauren's best friend since high school, gets drawn into the witches' orbit too. The found family forming around Lauren matters as much as the magic she is learning to control. A romance builds alongside the training, but the plot mostly watches a skeptical, career-first woman rebuild her life around people who finally take her seriously.
A Modern Witch opens the Modern Witch series. Its tone is light contemporary fantasy, heavy on humor and community rather than conflict, and it sets the register the later books follow.
