A Gentleman's Offer
A Gentleman's Offer is a 2025 Regency romance by Emma Orchard, set in 1817 London. Sir Dominic "Beau" de Lacy proposes to Maria Nightingale to honour his late father's dying wish, but at their engagement party her twin sister Meg reveals that Maria has disappeared. Meg persuades Dominic to let her stand in as his intended so the family can search for her sister before the substitution causes a scandal — and finds their manufactured engagement growing into real feeling along the way.
Orchard, a former Mills & Boon copy editor, writes openly of the novel's roots in Georgette Heyer fan fiction, and the book leans into that inheritance: period slang, a languid fashionable hero, an outspoken heroine, and a plot that turns increasingly farcical as the impersonation threatens to unravel. It pairs that Heyer-style wit with more explicit romantic content than Heyer herself published, and touches on women's independence and family secrets alongside the central mistaken-identity mystery.
It is the fourth of Orchard's Boldwood Books Regency novels, following A Duke of One's Own, What the Lady Want and For the Viscount's Eyes Only, and was marketed on release as part of a "Spicy Regency Romances" line.
