Synopsis

Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Maine, is shown an impossible thing by his dying friend Al: the pantry of a local diner opens onto a specific afternoon in September 1958. Time spent there passes almost instantly at home, and each trip resets the past completely. Al has spent years there on a single mission — to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy — and now, sick and out of time, he asks Jake to finish it.

So Jake steps back into a vivid, dangerous America of Elvis and rotary phones and casual menace, and settles into a small Texas town to wait for Lee Harvey Oswald. But the past does not want to be changed; it pushes back, harder the more it matters. And in the years of waiting, Jake builds a life — and falls in love with a librarian named Sadie — that he was never supposed to have.

Stephen King's sweeping time-travel novel is part thriller, part heartbreaking love story, and a meditation on whether the past should be changed at all.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is 11/22/63 connected to other Stephen King books?

While it is a standalone story, the novel features subtle connections to King's wider fictional universe, including references to Derry, Maine, and characters from his other works.

  • Is there a TV adaptation of 11/22/63?

A limited series adaptation of 11/22/63 was produced and released, starring James Franco. It generally follows the book's narrative arc.

  • What is the premise of 11/22/63?

A high school English teacher named Jake Epping discovers a portal in a diner that leads to September 9, 1958. He can return to that exact date as many times as he wants, but each trip resets whatever changes he made previously. He decides to use the portal to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy—traveling back and living in the late 1950s and early 1960s while watching Lee Harvey Oswald.

  • Does 11/22/63 have a definitive ending?

The story provides a complete and conclusive ending to Jake Epping's journey and the central conflict, without leaving major plot threads unresolved.

  • How long did King research the Kennedy assassination for this novel?

King spent approximately four years on research and writing. He has said he read everything available about Oswald, the Warren Commission report, and life in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His research into the texture of daily life in that era—food, prices, popular culture, social norms—is one of the novel's most praised elements.

  • What happens when Jake tries to change the past?

King posits that the past 'obdurate'—it resists change. The closer Jake gets to altering significant events, the more the world pushes back: car accidents, interference, unlikely coincidences that prevent the change. The resistance is proportional to the importance of what is being changed.

  • Was 11/22/63 adapted?

Yes. An eight-episode Hulu miniseries aired in 2016, starring James Franco as Jake Epping. King co-wrote the adaptation with Bridget Carpenter. It received strong reviews, with Franco's performance praised and the period recreation considered one of King's better adaptations.

  • Is there a love story in 11/22/63?

Yes—and King has called it the heart of the book. Jake falls in love with a woman named Sadie Dunhill while living in the past. The romance complicates his mission and forces a reckoning with the cost of changing history: if he succeeds, the life he has built—including Sadie—disappears entirely.
