About this series

The Penguin English Library is a Penguin Books imprint of collectable general readers' editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century to the end of the Second World War. It was first created in 1963 as a sister series to Penguin Classics, offering critical editions of English classics, and was folded into the Classics list in the mid-1980s. Penguin revived the name in 2012 for a new line of a hundred titles chosen for the beauty of the books themselves rather than for scholarly apparatus, expanding it past a hundred and twenty from 2018. Its titles are unrelated works by unrelated authors and carry no reading order — this is a publisher's line, not a sequence.
