Howl's Moving Castle
A trilogy set in the magical land of Ingary, following the wizard Howl, his fire demon Calcifer, and the women who become entangled with his moving castle. Sophie Hatter, cursed into old age, strikes a bargain with Calcifer in Howl's Moving Castle (1986); a young thief named Abdullah crosses paths with Howl and Sophie in the desert kingdom of Zanzib in Castle in the Air (1990); and an apprentice witch named Charmain Baker meets an aging Great-Uncle William, Sophie, and Howl in House of Many Ways (2008). Diana Wynne Jones completed the trilogy before her death in 2011.
The books in the Howl's Moving Castle series can be read as standalone stories, though reading them in publication order allows for a richer understanding of the world and recurring characters. Each book introduces new protagonists and settings while subtly expanding on the magical universe established in the first novel.
Yes, the first book in the series, Howl's Moving Castle, was adapted into an animated film by Studio Ghibli. The movie captures the spirit of the novel but takes creative liberties with the plot and character arcs.
The Howl's Moving Castle series is part of a larger magical world created by Diana Wynne Jones, often referred to as the "World of Ingary." While the books in this series are self-contained, other novels by the author share similar magical rules and a whimsical tone.
The Howl's Moving Castle books should be read in publication order. Start with "Howl's Moving Castle," then read "Castle in the Air," and finally "House of Many Ways."
