Synopsis

David Nicholls returns to the bittersweet, funny register of One Day with a love story about two people well past the age of expecting one. Marnie Walsh is thirty-eight, divorced, and working from home as a freelance copyeditor in London, her world shrunk to a set of safe routines. Michael Bradshaw is forty-two, a geography teacher in York still reeling from the end of his marriage after his wife, Natasha, left him.

Their mutual friend Cleo, worried about them both, engineers an Easter walking break across the north of England and quietly hopes something will spark. When bad weather scatters the rest of the group, Marnie and Michael are left to cover the long, wet miles of the Coast to Coast route alone together. Shared irritation turns to banter, banter to trust, and two guarded people begin, cautiously, to imagine a different life.

Told in alternating perspectives and full of Nicholls's trademark wit and ache, You Are Here is a novel about loneliness, second chances, and the courage it takes to let someone in.
