Such a beautiful and necessary book.
Admittedly, I was left a bit depressed after I finished reading but I'm extremely glad to have read it. It was an emotional and rewarding journey into one of the darkest periods of human history. It is shocking the degree of cruelty and perversity human beings are capable of if no laws reigned them (us) in. My own ancestors played both parts in the history of slavery, only the setting was in the Canary Islands and, fortunately, the sugar plantations here only thrived for a short time until the New World became a more lucrative business.
I hope more stories like this one are written.
