Synopsis

Burning Secret (Brennendes Geheimnis) follows Edgar, a lonely twelve-year-old vacationing with his mother at a spa resort, who is delighted when a worldly, attractive baron begins paying him attention — taking him on walks, treating him like an equal, making him feel, for the first time, interesting.

Edgar's pleasure curdles into confusion and jealousy once he realizes the baron's real target was never him but his mother, and that the friendship was only ever a means of getting close to her. Shut out of an adult world he is old enough to sense but too young to fully understand, Edgar becomes an unwilling witness and, eventually, an unwitting obstacle to the affair developing around him.

Zweig renders the story almost entirely from the boy's perspective, using a child's half-understanding of adult desire and betrayal to build tension without ever showing anything explicit — a study of the loss of innocence that turns on watching, not on what is actually done.
