Synopsis

Three witches — the formidable Granny Weatherwax, the earthy Nanny Ogg, and the romantic Magrat Garlick — become entangled in a royal succession crisis when a murdered king's baby is placed in their care. As a usurping duke and his manipulative wife seize the throne of Lancre, the witches must deploy their craft — and the kingdom's only theatrical troupe — to bring justice. A gleeful parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear, published November 1988.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Wyrd Sisters a good starting point for new Terry Pratchett readers?

Wyrd Sisters is often recommended as an excellent entry point into the Discworld series, as it introduces key characters and the unique blend of humor and social commentary without requiring prior knowledge of other books.

  • Does Wyrd Sisters have a stage or screen adaptation?

Wyrd Sisters was adapted into an animated television series. It also has a history of theatrical adaptations, including a notable stage play.

  • What Shakespeare plays does Wyrd Sisters parody?

Primarily Macbeth — usurping duke, manipulative wife, three witches — but also Hamlet (ghost of the murdered king, a play-within-a-play to expose the truth) and King Lear (the Fool, themes of madness and power). Pratchett quotes multiple Shakespeare plays directly, in absurd contexts.

  • How does Wyrd Sisters connect to Shakespeare?

Wyrd Sisters is a direct parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth, incorporating many of its plot points, character archetypes, and themes, but reinterpreting them through the lens of Pratchett's Discworld.

  • When was Wyrd Sisters published?

First published on 26 November 1988 by Victor Gollancz. It is the sixth Discworld novel and the second Witches book.

  • What does the title mean?

'Wyrd' is Old English and Norse for fate or destiny — the root of Shakespeare's 'Weird Sisters' in Macbeth. Pratchett's title both honours and gently deflates the reference.

  • Is Hwel a stand-in for Shakespeare?

Yes. Hwel is a dwarf playwright in Ankh-Morpork whose visions of grander theatrical possibilities parallel Shakespeare's career. Several of his fragments of dialogue closely echo famous Shakespearean lines.

  • Does the story follow Macbeth's plot closely?
