Wren Hunt
Wren, a seventeen-year-old augur living in the small Irish village of Kilshamble, has spent years suppressing apophenia, her family's forbidden power for finding lost or hidden things. When the augurs' rivals, the Judges, threaten what's left of Wren's community, she goes undercover in the household of David Corr, a Judge her family has sworn to hate, posing as a summer intern to search for the Daragishka Knot, an object that could restore the augurs' waning power.
As Wren gets closer to David, she is forced to weigh her loyalty to her family against a growing connection to the enemy, and to reckon with secrets in her own past. The story continues in The Wickerlight.
A young augur going undercover among her family's enemies.
A Judge, and the boy Wren is sent to spy on.
This is the first book in a series and functions as the starting point for the narrative, meaning it does not require prior knowledge of any other works.
The narrative draws inspiration from the Irish tradition of the Day of the Wren, which is observed on Saint Stephen's Day and historically involved the hunting of wrens.
While this book establishes the conflict between the Augurs and the Judges, the subsequent book in the series shifts the perspective to new characters while remaining set in the same world.
