Synopsis

As the Nazi Party's grip on Germany tightens, the children of the previous generation's wartime choices are forced to confront a world remade by ideology, violence, and the Cold War's opening. Carla von Ulrich, the daughter of a German aristocrat and an Englishwoman, becomes a nurse and a member of the resistance; her brother Erik, a former soldier, finds his own path through the horrors of the Eastern Front. Across the globe, the families of their friends and allies are drawn together by the same war, and later by the same uncertain peace. Spanning 1933 to 1949, Winter of the World follows these intertwined lives through the rise of the Third Reich, the Battle of Berlin, and the dawn of the Cold War.
