Synopsis

In late 18th-century Pennsylvania, the devout Theodore Wieland is driven to madness and murder by what he believes are divine commands. His sister, Clara, narrates the horrifying events, struggling to reconcile her brother's actions with his pious nature. This classic American gothic novel explores themes of religious fanaticism, psychological torment, and the deceptive nature of reality, alongside the prequel 'Memoirs of Carwin' which delves into the mysterious ventriloquist who may be behind the tragedy.
