Synopsis

Two mice and two little people live in a maze, and every day they go to Station C, where the cheese is. Cheese stands for whatever a person wants out of life: a job, a relationship, money, health. One morning the cheese is gone.

Sniff and Scurry, who never expected it to last, immediately head off into the maze to look for more. Hem and Haw, who had built their lives around Station C, stay put. They wait for the cheese to come back, argue about who is to blame, and grow hungrier. Eventually Haw admits the cheese is not returning and steps into the maze alone, leaving notes on the walls as he learns to move before he is forced to.

Spencer Johnson's 1998 parable is short enough to read in an hour and has sold more than thirty million copies in thirty-seven languages. It remains a fixture of corporate training and self-help shelves, read as a plain-spoken argument for anticipating change rather than resisting it.
