Synopsis

Rachel Blum is eight years old, born with a congenital heart defect, and awake in a hospital waiting room in the middle of the night when she meets Andy Landis — a boy with a broken arm who has come in alone. They talk for one night, and then their lives separate.

Rachel grows up comfortable in Florida; Andy grows up poor in Philadelphia, running fast enough to make people pay attention. Over three decades they meet again and again, in high school, in college, in the years after, each time under circumstances that make it harder to stay than to leave. Class, ambition, addiction, and their own bad timing keep getting in the way.

Weiner's first straightforward love story is less about whether Rachel and Andy belong together than about what two people actually owe each other across a lifetime of near-misses.
