In a word: beautiful.
Zadie Smith captures a lot of intricacies and nuances about race in the 20th century that a lot of other writers fail to totally grasp. Her telling of the Bangladeshi and Jamaican diaspora is well thought out, well rounded, and (in my opinion as an outsider to these communities) accurate. Smith details the feelings of not quite belonging to either group in a way that I have not yet seen (and honestly, doubt I will see for a long while) in fiction. This is the first of her books that I've read, and I'm super excited to read the rest.
