Whispers Beyond the Veil

Ruby Proulx has spent her whole life on the road with her father, a snake-oil salesman who has always found a use for her in his schemes. She reads tarot to get by and dreams of putting down roots somewhere. When one of her father's cures kills a customer, she runs — to Old Orchard, Maine, and an estranged aunt she has never met.

Honoria Belden runs the Hotel Belden, a seaside establishment that caters to spiritualists. When the medium she has engaged fails to appear, Ruby steps into the role, which is the closest thing to honest work she has ever been offered.

But the guests are not all what they claim, the police are asking questions, and Ruby's own past is close behind her. Jessica Estevao's debut opens the Change of Fortune historical mysteries.
