When the Sea Turned to Silver
Pinmei's world is turned upside down when soldiers kidnap her beloved storyteller grandmother. The Emperor seeks a legendary artifact, the Luminous Stone That Lights the Night, and Pinmei's grandmother is taken because of her knowledge of it. Joined by the mysterious Yishan, Pinmei must journey through a land of legends to find the stone and rescue her grandmother before it's too late.
This book is a companion novel to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky, sharing the same world and some recurring characters, but it can be read independently without needing to read the others first.
The story draws heavily from Chinese folklore, particularly tales of the Monkey King and other figures from classic Chinese mythology, weaving them into a new narrative.
This book was awarded a Newbery Honor in 2017, recognizing its distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
