⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
✦ TLDR ✦
I am a sucker for survival thrillers, but it is hard to find a really good one that genuinely has you wondering if they will make it out of not. This book had me gripped cover to cover, the pacing was perfect and the tension and twists were real! THIS is the kind of thriller I wish I could guarantee to read every time.
✦ Writing ✦
I’ve seen some reviews complaining that the writing was ‘too simple’ but honestly I didn’t get that? Yes, it didn’t use over-the-top vocabulary and descriptions, but it certainly wasn’t basic. The sentences were short and snappy, which fit with the urgency of the situation. The descriptions of situations were sharp and to the point, which to me fit perfectly with the book. I don’t need to know every detail of the boat when you are in the middle of a crisis.
✦ Pacing ✦
Much like the writing I found the pacing fast and when there was a slower chapter it gave that feeling of a false sense of security. There was always this layer of tension and impending doom and had me on edge.
✦ Characters ✦
The characters were realistic and relatable. Don’t you hate it when you are watching a horror/thriller and you sit there going “why would they do that?” This book didn’t have it, the characters were smart, but made mistakes like any human would under pressure. It made them feel so much more real and I genuinely cared about them!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the crew at Sourcebooks Fire for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
