We Are the Ants
Henry Denton has been abducted by aliens before, and no one believes him. This time they give him an ultimatum: in 144 days, he can push a button that will save the Earth from destruction — or not. Grieving his boyfriend's recent suicide, drowning in a chaotic home life (a stressed single mother, a brother about to become a teen father, a grandmother sinking into Alzheimer's), Henry genuinely isn't sure the world is worth saving.
Then he meets Diego, a guarded artist with his own troubled past, and begins to find reasons to want to stay. Shaun David Hutchinson blends science fiction with unflinching contemporary YA, using an absurd premise to ask a real question: what makes a life, or a world, worth choosing?
The author frequently includes cameos of characters from his other works, such as Henry appearing in The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza, which creates a shared universe across his bibliography.
A short companion story titled What We Pretend to Be was released separately and provides further context regarding other individuals who have experienced similar abductions.
