Anyone Can Betray Anyone
This series including this book was a rollercoaster and I have many mixed emotions about the series. I enjoyed the concept of this book and believe that it could have been great - there was enormous potential for a successful dystopian fantasy series. However, it was not great and it did not in my opinion complete the series on a high.
I feel Victoria Aveyard definitely stuck to her guns and her own trade mark in the book - Anyone can indeed betray anyone, a staple throughout the book and throughout the authors own writing. The book is so full of twists and switches that it becomes hard to follow and hard to understand who is actually fighting for what. Mare and Cal's constant back and forth was frustrating and overworked towards the end... Even once the book ended they still continued this pattern.
Let me tell you that when I finished this book i nearly tossed it across the room... Maybe the author thought she was being different by not ending on a high and ending with the two together, even possibly an attempt to drag it into a fifth book (something I honestly wish never happens). This series was overworked and could have been so much better if it was simplified and not so drawn out, finishing it was almost a chore.
Despite these notes, there were aspects I did enjoy and I give it credit for that. I score it at a 4/5 mainly due to the potential it could have had.
