Vox by Christina Dalcher held so much potential for me. Once I begun reading it I was drawn into the storyline of women losing all their rights, passports, jobs and essentially their voice. Limited to only 100 words a day this story showed how hard it is for women not only to speak but to keep relationships with their children, husbands and friends.
I liked the plot but quickly learnt that the main focus of the book wasn’t even the 100 words a day as you would think, but trailed off into a dramatic, love story, scientific thriller with random story lines that didn’t fit into the overall story for me. (Cheating, a baby, husband is ok with cheating, ok with leaving her kids, husband doesn’t stand up for anything and then is the hero?)
I did like the fact that Christina Dalcher explained how the country got to where it was as some dystopian books don’t delve into it, you’re just left guessing but I think I expected more.
Don’t get me wrong, if you like dystopian feminist thrillers you should definitely pick this one up and make up your own mind but unfortunately this one just wasn’t for me.
