Vampires of El Norte? More like a bamboozlement of 1st degree.
Author really slipped me a romantic novel in the guise of horror & historical fiction & it wasn't even that great.
If the majority of your conflict is coming from your characters' inability to properly communicate (a trait that you purposely added in them), then, as a writer, you gotta sit back and reflect on what type of story you're actually telling & is it worth your reader's time?
And this is coming from someone who adored Nena & Nestor. I loved the first two chapters, they hooked me right in, I loved the setting, the ranch, the cowboys, the whole childhood sweethearts trope, I just think the execution could've been a lot better.
What's up with nobody telling Nestor that Nena was alive these past 9 years?
What's up with Nena's dad suddenly melting at the prospect of her daughter marrying a vaquero in the second last chapter when he'd been against it this whole time?
What's up with Nena's Mama pumping her dad against Nestor the moment he arrived from war? Like, woman, seriously? At least offer the man some water, damn!
Now Vampires. Look, I appreciate the whole "vampires are just like any other animal" angle. It was fresh, opened the door to many possibilities. But barring the start & the finish, they were just used for padding, to create an opportunity for our main characters to talk and seduce each other and that was it. Once again, the execution felt off.
Despite it all, I still kinda enjoyed it.
