Synopsis

The world outside is finished, drowned, scorched, and poisoned by ecological catastrophe. What remains of one woman's life is spent inside the House of the Sacred Sisterhood, a fanatical convent ruled by a shadowy Superior and enforced through ritual, silence, and cruelty. Here, the faithful are sorted into ranks, and the coveted status of the Chosen is earned only through obedience and suffering.

In stolen moments, using ink she must hide, the narrator commits her forbidden memories and doubts to paper, a small, dangerous act of selfhood in a place designed to erase it. When a mysterious new woman arrives, the certainties that have kept the narrator alive begin to fracture, and she is forced to reckon with what she has done to survive and what the Sisterhood truly is. Originally published in Spanish as "Las indignas," Agustina Bazterrica's novel is a fragmentary, unsettling work of dystopian literary horror about faith, complicity, and the will to remember.
