Synopsis

Omarosa Manigault Newman spent over a decade in Donald Trump's orbit, first as a contestant and confidante on The Apprentice, then as Director of Communications for the White House Office of Public Liaison from January 2017 until her firing by Chief of Staff John Kelly in December 2017.

Unhinged: An Insider's Account of the Trump White House, published by Gallery Books on August 14, 2018, is her first-person account of that arc, tracing what she describes as a slow break from unquestioning loyalty into viewing the president as unfit for office.

The memoir describes internal White House dysfunction, her abrupt dismissal, and her account of being offered a $15,000-a-month position on the Trump 2020 campaign in exchange for her silence, which she says she refused. It also contains her disputed claim to have heard a recording of Trump using a racial slur during his years on The Apprentice — an allegation the Trump campaign denied and later pursued in arbitration over alleged confidentiality-agreement violations, a case it lost in 2021.

Unhinged debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list within its first week and was one of the most widely covered political books of 2018. The Trump administration disputed its contents; then-Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called it "riddled with lies and false accusations."
