I think this is the perfect example of making characters invincible by overpowering them and no longer knowing how to handle it.
We’re being told since book 4 how strong Oli is, we’ve read scenes where she gets to a place and kills everyone in matter of seconds. In this one the whole bonded group becomes the strongest people on earth. And it makes everything boring and anticlimactic, no one is stronger than them, so the villains and conflicts doesn’t feel believable and realistic anymore no matter how much the author tries to introduce new threats.
The plot: I really liked the beginning of the series, I think the concept was great, even though it had its flaws I thought than giving the length of the series everything was going to fall into place. But the more the story progress the more it started to deviate from the original concept. I didn’t like god-bonds plot. I really wished the story would have concentrated in The Resistance and the tension between the gifted and the non-gifted people, although it was an interesting and original turn to the story, the gods only brought more questions without an answer, created plot holes and incoherent scenes.
The Characters: For me this is one the series strongest points of the series (or was), every mmc had a distinct personality and Oli was a very strong female lead. Even if I didn’t like some parts of the story the characters were the ones that made me keep reading the next book because I truly liked them, but in the last books they all become a shadow of what they were and their interactions are unimportant to the story. Suddenly all they do is build things, and have sleepovers.
The Length of the series: I love that there is a cover for each main character, and they’re beautiful and look amazing together but dragging the story for 6 books is unnecessary. The pages are filled with side stories and characters that don’t really matter, and then there’s all of that repetitiveness of mundane scenes that add nothing to the story, not even to the relationships of the bonds and this is something that happened from the first book, I felt like I was constantly reading the same scenes, phrases and words over and over again. And there’s only so much you can ignore, before you need a break.
The Ending: I think the biggest downfall is that you know that Oli could have finished the battle since the beginning of the book. And the villain felt very plain. I had no idea who that person was and also didn’t care. With Silas you had previous history and you hated him, but Pain was irrelevant and The Eternal could have sucked her soul in the first meeting, I didn’t even understand why they needed Nox’s plan.
I don’t want to only bring out the negative, because overall I liked the concept, I liked where it was heading, but I was rushing through the last books just to know the ending, not to actually enjoy the events leading to it.
Overall what I’ll remember most will be the characters, and it’s something that I can’t say from most books and series.
