⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
✦ TLDR ✦
It is rare to get a sequel that lives up to the first. I usually find the middle book to be fluff, not very intriguing and mostly setup for the final installment. Turncloak is an exception to that rule, I enjoyed this just as much, maybe more than Silvercloak. There was character, world and plot building. I was so entranced whilst reading this I forgot about the outside world.
✦ Writing ✦
Just between two books you can see how much L.K. Steven has grown as an author. Everything in Turncloak was more heightened, which is a testament to the writing. Descriptions were more vivid, emotions hit harder, twists were harder to see coming. I love seeing author's fine-tune their voice and I am loving where L.K. Steven is going.
✦ Pacing ✦
This book started slower than Silvercloak. There wasn't an immediate jump into action, which normally I wouldn't like. Usually I am a fast-paced type of gal, but the character and world building that was done in place of the action still had me gripped. Then when everything started picking up half-way through, I couldn't put it down.
✦ Characters ✦
Much like in Silvercloak, our characters are flawed and problematic. I loved getting more POVs and diving more into each of their minds. Each character was so unique, facing their own struggles and fighting their own battles and it really makes you realise how what you see on the outside is not at all what could be on the inside.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the crew at Del-Rey for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
