Easily one of the strongest entries in the Dresden Files. The central premise is of Morgan showing up on Harry’s doorstep framed for treason for the murder of senior member of the white council, it flips years of animosity on its head and forces a fascinating look at the White Council’s internal politics. The pacing is relentless, the stakes feel lethal, and seeing Harry navigate allies who might be enemies (and vice versa) keeps the tension high throughout. Knocking off one star only because the middle investigation drags just a hair before the explosive finale, but the climax and emotional payoff make it an absolute standout in the series.
