I went in knowing the setup was a little odd. An arranged marriage, a staged haunting, and two people who want the same house for different reasons. It leans into the oddness in a low-stakes kind of way.
Jane stands out because she is blunt and guarde, and I love that kind of honesty in characters, even if she was little pushy at times. bc Penvale was there to balance her. He is patient and thoughtful. Their relationship grows through grotwth in trust even if not strong chemistry.
The plot feels simple. The fake ghost plan adds humor, although it does get little repetitive. The middle slows down, yet overall it has that cozy feeling. The friendship between them is the main focus.
You do not need to read the earlier books to follow this one. If you like easy pacing and awkward characters figuring each other out, you’ll enjoy.
