That little snippet of life that too relatable even when it was just a fiction. 10 short stories of mystery and wonder at a life; on present and past, illuminating the moment in lives of both men and women-- "What does it mean to be a man and a woman together; or a man and a woman, once together and now apart?"
Bunch of it having catchy and twisty narratives, some are too surreal while few just an okay. Having few stories as my favourite:
Amour
A story of Sophie as remembered by the narrator, a long lost friend who he suddenly meet again at a refugee camp. Emotionally bittersweet, and as much as I love the ending it was just too heartbreaking :/
"...it felt good to be useful, good to be able to make things a little bit easier for her."
Switzerland
This started so well, intriguing and compelling. I am curious of Soraya and love how the narrator telling her story and their past friendship. A lovely reminiscing plot.
Future Emergencies
A post 9/11 background, story of a couple and their days experiencing the stay at home, stocking necessities and listening to the news. I love the scrabbles scene, that random annoyance and sadness. A realisation of regret and of life, as what it is, should just go on.
The Husband
Profound phrasing and I really love Tamar's mom. It flows 'bizarrely' but I like how Tamar soon realised at the end that 'the husband' might be a 'gift'; received without our having known to ask. The idea almost exceptional to me.
Think I fancy the diversity of its characters the most-- their backgrounds and personalities, also the simplicity and how each idea evokes one's consideration and views about life. There's depth and sadness, evocative and sentimental and yet engagingly beautiful.
