This is my first review, so take that into account.
I read this on the heels of 11/22/63, which I loved. When, at the end, I saw that Stephen King highly recommended this book and called it THE time travel novel, I jumped on it. Mr. King and I usually agree on his recommendations, as he is a King (pun intended) in the literary world...this wasn't one of them. Although, you can definitely tell Mr. King's endorsement of this book bleeds through as there are many similarities between this and 11/22/63. Maybe that's just inevitable when writing of time travel.
I loved the premise, most of the characters and the twists and turns...but in my opinion the book got a little too far into the weeds with trying to paint the scene. Don't get me wrong, I love when an author paints a detail scene and allows me to throw the image up into my mind's eye, to a point. I don't need to know what every single person in a scene is wearing, down to the buttons on the boots. I felt like I, as the reader, got buried too often in the minutia. I believe this book could have been shortened with a little more of an editor's touch. Also I personally feel that the "time traveller almost blowing up the whole world for love" trope to be a little predictable and possibly overdone.
That said, the issues I listed did not take away from the overall quality of the book in my opinion, which is why I still have it four stars.
