Synopsis

Jason, a student of Socrates, is drawn into the Peloponnesian War as the protégé of Polemides, a scarred Spartan-trained mercenary and commander in the Athenian army. Through Jason's eyes, the novel follows the two men across decades of conflict, from the siege of Potidaea to the disastrous Sicilian Expedition, as they navigate the shifting alliances, betrayals, and personal costs of a war that reshapes the ancient Greek world. The story is told in a reflective, first-person voice, blending vivid military detail with a meditation on honor, choice, and the men forged by war.
