Synopsis

Jeremiah Thurston, a self-made and enormously wealthy businessman, builds Thurston House — one of the most symbolic mansions in San Francisco — for the family he intends to raise there with his young wife, Camille. It does not go as he planned, and he finds himself alone with his infant daughter, Sabrina.

Jeremiah is determined to bring Sabrina up to run the biggest mining business in California. She inherits her mother's beauty and her father's wisdom and strength, and nothing will stop her from taking over his dynasty: not the San Francisco earthquake, not the schemes of a cunning rival, not the Great Depression, and not her own needs and ambitions as she carries on the traditions her father established.

Danielle Steel's fifteenth novel, first published in 1983, is a family saga that runs across three generations, from the turn of the century through to the Second World War.
