Threads That Bind
Descendants of the Fates are born in threes: one to weave, one to draw, one to cut the threads that tie people to the things they love and to life itself. Io Ora is the youngest of the Ora sisters, a cutter, and she scrapes a living as a private investigator in Alante — a Greek-myth-descended city half-drowned by rising water.
Her latest job turns into something worse than a missing person. Someone is taking women, maiming their life-threads, and loosing the resulting wraiths on the city to kill. To get anywhere near the culprit, Io has to work with Edei Rhuna, right hand of the city's Mob Queen and, inconveniently, the boy on the other end of the rare fate-thread that marks the two of them as soulmates.
Kika Hatzopoulou's debut is a noir investigation wearing mythology: a wet, stratified, class-riven city, a detective with an unreliable gift, and a case that keeps folding back into her own family. First of a duology, followed by Hearts That Cut.
