After her father's suicide, Una seeks escape by taking a teaching job in the remote Icelandic village of Skálar, population ten. The isolated community and bleak weather quickly unnerve her, and she begins to hear unsettling sounds in her old house. When a young girl from the village is found dead just before midwinter, Una fears she is losing her mind and that a killer lurks among the remaining nine residents.
