Synopsis

Thérèse Desqueyroux is a woman trapped in a loveless marriage to a man she does not love, and a stifling domestic life that has become a prison. When she begins an affair with a married man, the brief escape threatens to shatter the fragile order of her world. François Mauriac's 1927 novel is a masterful study of desire, guilt, and the cost of a single act of rebellion, told with the psychological depth and restrained prose for which he is known.
