In 1950s Brighton, Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens investigates a murder where the victim has been cut into three pieces, mimicking a famous magic trick. He enlists the help of his old friend, magician Max Mephisto, to help track down a killer who knows their wartime secrets. The investigation forces them to revisit their service in a secret military unit known as the Magic Men to find the culprit.
