The woman in black
A young solicitor named Arthur Kipps is sent to the remote market town of Crythin Gifford to settle the affairs of the late Mrs. Alice Drablow, a reclusive widow whose home, Eel Marsh House, stands alone on a causeway cut off by the tide. Sorting through her papers, Kipps glimpses a wasted woman dressed all in black at the funeral, and again at the house — and begins to sense that the isolated marsh holds a grief and a fury that have never been laid to rest.
As the mist rolls in and the causeway floods, Kipps is drawn into the tragic history behind the woman in black, and learns that her appearances carry a terrible cost for the town.
Susan Hill's modern classic is a masterclass in restrained, old-fashioned terror — a slow-building gothic ghost story told with the atmosphere of a candlelit Victorian tale and a chill that lingers long after the last page.
