War of the Worlds might be my least favorite of Well's novels. I can appreciate the impact it had on science fiction and its influence. I mean, it's incredible that it was written at the end of the 19th century. It was very innovative for its time, but I just didn't find it as interesting as his other work. The language, however, was beautiful at times, and his knowledge of contemporary theories and science was impressive.
I found that the book was too short, so it didn't have time to explore its themes deeply enough. I was also expecting the invasion to go large-scale and affect the whole world, so it was a bit of a let-down to see it confined to England. The resolution was a bit of a deus ex machina but there was at least some foreshadowing. The main characters weren't too engaging either since we didn't really get to know them. There were enough thrilling scenes and suspense to keep me from nodding off, though.
